Description
The Manananggal is a mythical ‘aswang’ (demon/ghost) in the Philippines. Disguises as a beautiful maiden in daylight, and transforms into a monster during the night. Her upper torso detaches from her lower body and grows a pair of bat-like wings. These give her the appearance similar to a vampire. Her upper half then flies away to prey on sleeping pregnant women to suck out their blood and fetuses. Such a legend so familiar it was associated in miscarriage superstitions.
