Description

Hanan (Hana in Baybayin) is the pre-colonial Philippine goddess of dawn. She is one of the three daughters of Bathala along with Mayari (moon) and Tala (star) to a mortal woman. She is also the goddess of the morning and of childbirth, which represents new beginnings.

In native Tagalog culture, the tribes offered the first prayer of the day to her as a sign of a new cycle of the day. The rooster is often attributed to her as a symbol of dawn. She symbolizes the beginning of a new age or phase in one’s life. People celebrate a child’s birth by offering her plentiful crops and prayers, as well as the transition to manhood or womanhood of the tribe’s members.

The prayers that are offered to her are also a gesture for luck for every planting season and harvesting season. These prayers are only conducted by the natives at the break of dawn.

Hanan is wearing a traditional clothing from Panay Bukidnon (Suludnon) natives in central Philippines, Visayas. She is holding an ancient weapon used by the tribes called Sumpit. A long bamboo blow dart used for hunting. Equipped with wooden darts which tips are dipped in poison.
